The AJL was formed on 11 November 1972 by Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani (Wikipedia) who was affiliated with the ruling Awami League. It is uncertain what his role was and if the PGM was created by the government. There is no evidence the group was active when the Awami League ruled Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001.
