Banser (Indonesia)

Name assigned by coder: no
PGM ID Number: 345
Country: Indonesia
Date formed: May 9, 2000
Details of Formation: This group is the civilian militia wing the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Muslim group (also described as Presdient Abdurrahman Wahid (aka Gus Dur)'s political party) which Gus Dur was Chairman of for 15 years before he became President in 1999. After he became president he didn't chair this group anymore but it, naturally, was very pro-Dur and was mobilized several times on his behalf. NU was established by Gus Dur's grandfather in the 1920s and is the 'largest Muslim org in the world' with 30m members.
Date dissolved: July 23, 2001
Details of Termination: Gus Dur was removed from the presidency in 2001 and so Banser ceased to be a pgag--as it was actively antipathetic to the successor Megawati Soekarnoputri.
