Other Information: - the PDF oversees all Northern militias - the PDF is an umbrella organisation which incorporates tribal/ethnic militias as - for example - the Murahilin, the Janjaweed, Arab Baggara militias in general (Rizaygat, Missiriya, etc) and the Fertit Militiamen - it conducts joint operations with the army and Southern militias - the PDF is loyal to Hassan al-Turabi (leader of the NIF) - the PDF are modelled after the Iranian Revolutionary Guards which also provide material resources to the PDF - it is financed by Islamic banks in Sudan and abroad - the enrolment of government employees and university students is compulsory since 1992 - recruits get a rudimentary military training coupled with political and Islamic indoctrination - recruits have to become Muslims - sometimes also called "NIF militia" or "mujahidin"
